The governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum has approved the immediate implementation of N30,000 minimum wage to teachers in the state.

The new minimum wage which will take effect 1st August, 2022 will commence with 4,491 qualified teachers of the Local Government Education Authority payroll.

The governor had been criticised by the public following social media posts that alleged public primary school teachers were paid between N7,000 to N11,000 monthly in the state.

The approval of the new minimum wage was given yesterday in Maiduguri following the governor's return from an official visit to Japan.

The governor gave the approval during a meeting with the chairmen and members of the state Civil service and local government service commissions, Head of Service, members of Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) at the Government House, Maiduguri.

Zulum further assured that all outstanding promotion benefits for the state's civil servants will be implemented starting from January 2022 to 2023.

He added that the Borno state government will conduct promotional examination for its qualified civil servants.

While noting the challenges of the state and local government civil service, Zulum said: ”The problems in the state civil service and the local government service commissions are enormous.

"Many people could not understand the complexity of problems we have at hand, but I assure you we are going to sit down and address them with time."

The governor who lamented over the number of teachers without qualified certificates said his administration will train 1000 teachers out of the 3000 unqualified.

He said the 1000 unqualified teachers who prove to be trainable will be trained at the Colleges of Education Waka Biu and Bama.

He added that others would undergo training under the tutelage of the National Teachers Institute (NTI) for a period of six months.

Zulum further stated that those that pass the competency test will be absorbed into the system.

Meanwhile the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Borno state, Comrade Yusuf Inuwa commended the governor for taking a bold step in implementing the minimum wage.

He added that the union will continue to work with the government while rendering its support.
