Borno: Zulum unveils initiative to revive irrigation farming

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum has unveiled a 90-horsepower capacity solar irrigation pump station among other initiative to revive irrigation farming in Damasak, Mobbar Local Government Area in the Northern part of the state.

Unveiling the initiative on Friday, Zulum explained that the pumping station has a 115 Kilowatt solar farm powering three units of 30-horsepower pumps, discharging 225 litres per second with 105 discharge points covering 125 hectares of rice fields.

He added that the initiative was part of eforts by his administration to shift focus from distributing food to residents by empowering farming activities.

He said: “Shorter-term solution to our problems is no longer sustainable, continuous provision of food to the people and keeping of IDPs in the camp is not sustainable either.

Governor Zulum equally launched the sale of subsidized petrol to the farmers at the rate of N500 to boost dry season farming.

He disclosed that the state government will provide 1 million litres of petrol to farmers across the state to sustain the initiative.

He said: "I want to announce that for this year's irrigation activities, the government of Borno State is to procure 1 million litres of petrol and distribute it in the entire state at a subsidised rate to farmers.

“In addition to this, we have procured 20,000 bags of fertiliser, 1,000 solar-powered water pumps and another 5,000 water pump machines to be distributed to farmers across the three senatorial districts of Borno.”
