Borussia Dortmund loan move delights Chelsea defender Maatsen

Borussia Dortmund loan move delights Chelsea defender Maatse

Following Borrusia Dortmund's qualification to the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League, on-loan left-back Ian Maatsen has expressed delight at how his move has panned out after he scored a crucial goal in the 4-2 win over Atletico Madrid.

Maatsen was billed to move to Burnley in a £31.5m move but the defender turned down the move in favour of a loan to Dortmund. Chelsea are expected to still sell the defender in the summer as the player has a £35m release clause.
“It was a surprise, I always had the belief to play for Chelsea but unfortunately for some reason, it didn’t work out," he told the Dortmund website.

“Now I’m here, I’m very grateful for this opportunity and this moment. I can say I’m very proud of myself, kept believing in myself and came here to play my game at the highest level.”

The joy reverberating at Signal Iduna Park was also mirrored by the other Dortmund players who made telling contributions in the huge win over the Spanish side.

"It was magical. I try not to go overboard in interviews, but it was really magical. The stadium was on fire," Fuellkrug told DAZN.

"We did give them chances and goals in the 15 minutes after half-time, we have to improve that for sure, but our response to it was sensational," said Julian Brandt who scored the first of the four goals in the 4-2 win.

Former winners of the competition Dortmund, are currently fifth in the German top flight and struggling to qualify for next season's Champions League.
