The Court of Appeal in Abuja has confirmed Ahmed Aliyu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the Governor of Sokoto State.
A three-member panel of justices ruled on Monday, confirming Aliyu as the winner of the March 18 governorship election and dismissing the appeal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Saidu Umar.
Umar had disputed the conclusion of the Sokoto governorship election, claiming alleged certificate forgery, name variations, election fraud, and noncompliance with electoral norms.
Furthermore, the court ruled that the subpoenaed witnesses failed to file their sworn testimony with the election petition within 21 days, as required by law.
The Appellate Court also ruled that the evidence presented by the PDP's two major witnesses was inadmissible and was struck from the record for not being front-loaded.
The appellate court's decision upholds the ruling of the Sokoto Governorship Election Tribunal, which dismissed the PDP candidate's challenge on September 30 for lack of merit because the charges could not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
