Tensions rose as students of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi ,Yelwa Campus, Monday protested over the stabbing of Joseph Agbabaidu, a final-year Geology student to death.
Allnews.ng learned that police teargassed the protesting students which ignited tension in the state.
Recall that Agbabaidu lost his life in a robbery attempt over the weekend.
In anticipation of the planned peaceful protest on Monday, police adopted a proactive attitude, stationing armoured vehicles opposite the school gate.
As the students began their protest, the situation reportedly worsened, and police reportedly used tear gas, disturbing the protest and escalating tensions on campus.
Agbabaidu, a 500-level student, was attacked by a robbery group on his way home to Yelwan Tudu, about one kilometre from the school gate.
Despite the efforts of medical workers, he died from his injuries on Sunday morning, igniting widespread rage among students.
The college entrance was closed as students demonstrated their displeasure, disrupting operations in Bauchi's Yelwa district. Students raised their voices in support of justice and increased security, pushing authorities to address their concerns as soon as possible.
