Brighton hopeful of beating Chelsea to McKenna deal

Brighton are cautiously optimistic that they can secure the services of Kieran McKenna who is unlikely to continue in his job as Ipswich Town coach, according to several British newspapers on Thursday

McKenna steered the Tractor Boys to two consecutive promotions from League One to the Premier League.

Having gained promotion to the topflight along with Leicester City, there are interests from clubs in the English topflight who want to recruit a young coach as a new shift in policy.

Insidefutbol.com wrote: "The 38-year-old is set to reject an offer of a new deal from Ipswich Town this week and is expected to leave the club after masterminding back-to-back automatic promotions from League One to the Premier League.

"He is one of the top contenders for Chelsea, who are looking for a new manager after deciding to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino earlier this week.

"Manchester United are also expected to consider him if they sack Erik ten Hag following the FA Cup but Chelsea are being considered the favourites.

"However, it has been claimed that Brighton are confident of beating Chelsea to McKenna’s signature.

The Times in the UK wrote: "Brighton are confident of beating the Blues to a deal for the Northern Irishman.

"The Seagulls are also on the lookout for a new manager following the departure of De Zerbi at the end of last season.

"Brighton are expected to make a formal approach and are willing to meet McKenna’s personal terms, with the compensation due to Ipswich around £6m."
