The Economic Community of West Africa Countries (ECOWAS) has appointed President Muhammdu Buhari as the coordinator of the COVID-19 response in the sub-region.
This was announced by Femi Adesina, the special adviser on media and publicity to Buhari on Thursday.
Allnews reports that the sub-regional heads held a virtual summit in a video conference on the said day.
The summit was held to deliberate on the rise in coronavirus cases across the sub-region.
He tweeted, “the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, leaders at an extraordinary summit held by video conference have appointed President Muhammadu Buhari as the Champion to coordinate the COVID-19 response in the sub-region.
“All the other Presidents will be available to support President Buhari.”

On Tuesday, updates from the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) said confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the region are 5,774.
However, 1,616 patients have recovered from the disease, with 147 deaths recorded in the region.
