Former Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso pulled one over his former side as Bayer Leverkusen defeated Bavarians on Sunday, with Argentine World Cup winner Exequiel Palacios scoring both goals from the penalty spot.
The match ended 2-1 on the night as Borussia Dortmund retained the top spot on the Bundesliga table.
The match was not without controversy as VAR intervened twice to reverse initial decisions by the referee and award penalties to Leverkusen.
Bayern forward Thomas Mueller admitted that Leverkusen was the better team and that Bayern deserved to lose. As a result of this loss, Bayern now trails league leaders Dortmund by just one point, with the two teams set to meet in the next round of games on April 1.
The defeat also kept Leverkusen in the running for European qualification, with Alonso's side now just three points behind sixth place.
