Cameroon Places Restriction On Movement Along Its Border With Equatorial Guinea

Cameroon has restricted movement along its border with Equatorial Guinea following "several unexplained deaths" from hemorrhagic fever, the health ministry said on Friday.

The restrictions were imposed in "view of the high risk of importation of this disease and to detect and respond to any cases at an early stage", it said in a statement.

With the assistance of specialists from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Atlanta Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, investigations have begun, and epidemiological surveillance has been intensified, according to the statement made available to Africanews.

In a statement released, Equatorial Guinea stated that nine fatalities had been reported as a result of an "exceptional epidemiological scenario" that had occurred in the preceding few weeks in the Kie-Ntem province's Nsok Nsomo region.

In a statement released on Friday, the health ministry of Cameroon stated that it has identified about 20 fatalities in villages in the neighbouring province of Kie-Ntem, Equatorial Guinea.

Ngu Fankam Roland, the district's director of health, stated in a statement that the "non-identified illness" produced nasal bleeding, fever, joint discomfort, and other maladies that resulted in death within a few hours.
