Canoe Mishap Kills Six In kebbi

A canoe accident in the Suru Local Government Area, Kebbi State, has taken the lives of six girls, according to NAN.

Alhaji Umaru Maigandi, Chairman of Suru Local Government made the confirmation to the news agency on Tuesday.

He said that the accident happened while the canoe was transporting the girls across the Tindifai River on Monday.

“The village is close to Bendu in Tundifai; they were going to harvest rice in the Fadama area when the incident occurred and resulted in the death of six females.

“The deceased were between the ages of 12 years and 15 years.

“The three other victims had been rescued alive by the driver of the canoe, Umar Faruk, a 13-year-old.

“The deceased had been buried according to the Islamic rites, and we have condoled the families as well as sympathized with those that survived the mishap,” he said.

Maigandi says that the capsizing happened because of the canoe being overloaded, as it had a five-person carrying capacity.
