Carabao Cup: Isak Scores Winner In Newcastle Clash With Man

Alexander Isak's strike gave Newcastle a hard-fought 1-0 win over Manchester City to reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

The Magpies barely got a kick in a first half dominated by the visitors and were lucky not to have fallen behind.

Julian Alvarez drew the game's first save from a tight angle on 18 minutes, with his right-footed drive saved by the foot of the still-standing Nick Pope, and blazed  another shot past the opposite post on the half-hour.

But with Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon sent on at the break, Newcastle were transformed.

Guimaraes orchestrated Newcastle's ferocious press and their efforts were duly rewarded on 53 minutes when Isak tapped-in to send the Gallowgate End into a sea of ecstasy.

City were rattled and Pep Guardiola was forced to turn to some of his star names on his substitutes bench to try and dig them out.

But none of them could find that draw City level as the Magpies ran away with the win.

Newcastle will now turn their attention to Burnley on Saturday in the Premier League and hope to build on tonight's performance, while City will be hoping to return to winning ways when they visit Wolves in three days' time.
