CBN Didn't Inform Us Before Freezing #EndSARS Promoters Account - Senate

CBN Didn't Inform Us Before Freezing #EndSARS Promoters Acco

The Nigerian Senate has revealed that it was not informed before the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) froze the accounts of individuals believed to be promoters of the #EndSARS protest.

According to the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters,  Opeyemi Bamidele, the lawmakers only saw the development on news like every other Nigerian.

Speaking with journalists after the  Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, appeared before the committee, to defend the ministry’s 2021 budget estimates on Monday, Bamidele said that the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, never wrote to the Senate before taking the decision.

Bamidele further revealed that the Senate would reach out to the CBN and the Federal Government to know what the stakeholders in charge were trying to achieve.

“We are not aware of the CBN freezing the accounts of #EndSARS campaigners. We read it in the news like everyone else. Our committee is interested in knowing what is going on in this regard. Our committee is neither in a position to either explain or defend the CBN’s action.

“We will reach out to the executive. If it is true, we would find out what the stakeholders in charge are trying to achieve with this,” Bamidele said.
