Centre Demands CBN's Report On Naira Distribution

Centre Demands CBN's Report On Naira Distribution

The Centre for Ability, Rehabilitation and Empowerment (C.A.R.E.) Nigeria, a non-governmental organisation for the advancement of Persons With Disability (PWD) has demanded that a daily report on the distribution of new naira notes be made public by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The centre made the call on Sunday in a statement issued by its Founder/Chief Responsibility Officer, Dr Chike Okogwu in Abuja, the nation's capital.

Okogwu charged President Muhammadu Buhari to issue a directive to CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele to make known the amount of cash deposited in each bank across the country.

"With this singular move, all Nigerians will openly know which banks got what amounts and are hoarding the newly released notes.

"CARENigeria is calling on President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR to immediately direct the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) through the CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele to publish daily reports of how much new notes that each bank branch gets in Nigeria so that Nigerians can #TrackYourNewNoteCash."

While commending the initiative of the Federal Government on the new naira notes, the centre however stressed that the policy has created hardship for PWDs as the cash scarcity poses challenges in purchasing basic needs.

"CARENigeria further reiterates her support and lauding of the introduction of new naira notes even as we observe that Persons with Disabilities are not having it easy with the scarcity of Naira notes currently being experienced nationwide.

"Many of them cannot buy foodstuffs, medication, pay transportation when they need to move and carry out other necessary functions required to live a normal empowered life.

"The Central Bank should equally direct all banks to prioritise attending to Persons with Disabilities who come into their branches in line with the National Disability Act of 2019."
