Charlie Charlie Challenge: What You Should Know

Charlie Charlie Challenge: What You Should Know

Charlie Charlie Challenge is the new trend that has set the internet ablaze with over 200k tweets from Nigeria alone.

Nigerians online hold very diverse opinions about the game. Some people claim the game is real while others claim it is just another cheap stunt which social media users are only cruising with. While yet others believe that Nigerians may be adding more to whatever evil is already plaguing them.

Many are playing the game out of curiosity while others are making the game and its players a matter of serious prayer.

The game involves summoning a demon known as ‘Charlie’ to produce answers to questions. Two pencils are crossed on a paper to create a grid with sectors labelled ‘yes’ and ‘no’. When the demon is summoned by saying ‘Charlie Charlie, are you there? the demon responds by moving the top pencil to the direction of yes or no, just like a compass. Then the player can go ahead to ask other questions like ‘Will I pass my exams?’, ‘Does my crush like me?’ or ‘Will Chelsea win tonight?’

But, is a demon really in charge of this game? What really moves the pencil? These are questions that have plagued the minds of internet users.

Even at that, it is still believed that Charlie is a ghost or spirit that answers questions.

Origin

The game is not new, but many people are just getting to know about it. The origin of this game is unclear but several reports claim the game originated from Mexico. The story flying around is that Charlie is a Mexican demon that died from a violent crime. It goes unconfirmed though.

According to BBC Mundo correspondent, Maria Elena Navez, there is no god of Mexican origin with the name ‘Charlie’.

She stated that if the game really originated from Mexico, it would have been called ‘Carlitos, which means Charlie in Spanish.

Why Does The Pencil Move?

Well, one logical explanation is that the pencils are not balanced on each other and could be easily moved by the slightest of breeze. Even the air we breathe is capable of moving it.
