CHECKED: Information on Deletion of Igbo, Yoruba Languages, Replacement With Hausa, Fulani Misrepresentation of Fact

CHECKED: Information on Deletion of Igbo, Yoruba Languages,

Simon Ekpa, a Nigerian political activist, known for his prominent advocacy of the contemporary Biafran independence movement recently claimed on Facebook that Igbo and Yoruba have been “deleted” from Nigerian languages, and replaced with English, Hausa and Fulani.

He accompanied his claim with an image and this link, https://enterbiafra.com/world-information-shows-igbo-and-yoruba-deleted-from-nigeria-language-and-replaced-with-english-hausa-and-fulani/. But, this is a misrepresentation of fact, AllNews’ probe established.

What we found out

The details on the image Ekpa uploaded clearly shows that this ‘World Information’ is from the 90s.

The list is obviously pre-1991 when Lagos stopped being the capital of Nigeria. So this has nothing to do with current events in the country as Ekpa seems to insinuate while pushing the pro-Biafra (anti-north) agenda.

Why was Yoruba and Igbo omitted in major languages?

This reporter tried to get a clue of the source of the list put up by Ekpa - to help explain why Yoruba and Igbo were omitted in the compilation, but efforts proved abortive.

It is curious to see Hausa and Fulani (both of Northern Nigeria) on the list and none of the major languages in Southern Nigeria.

Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo are usually considered Nigeria's top three major languages.

That said, there is no ‘replacement’ here, as claimed.

Major languages of countries of the world - from that period - were only listed.
