This is the eighth signing for Graham Potter's struggling Chelsea in the January transfer window, as they look to turn their fortunes around.
Fernandez's transfer fee of £106.8 million surpasses the previous record of £100 million, which was paid by Manchester City to Aston Villa for Jack Grealish in 2021.

The 22-year-old only joined Benfica in July 2022, for a reported fee of around £10 million. He signed an eight-and-a-half-year deal until 2031.
The World Cup winner was named the Best Young Player of the World Cup for his displays with the Argentina national team during their successful campaign in Qatar.
Todd Boehly's consortium has invested hundreds of millions into Chelsea since buying the club at the end of last season. However, the club is currently in 10th place in the Premier League.
Chelsea also signed Mykhaylo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, Noni Madueke, and Joao Felix (on loan from Atletico Madrid) in the January transfer window.
