Chelsea Sign Mendy From Rennes Till 2025

Chelsea has completed the signing of Renne's goalkeeper Edouard Mendy on a five-year deal.

The Blues continues a huge summer spending spree with the arrival of a new goalkeeper, to compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga for the starting position.

He completed his medical on Tuesday, with manager Frank Lampard having said he wants to increase competition with club-record signing Kepa Arrizabalaga, who cost £71m.

The Senegalese transfer was in the region of €20-25m (plus some add-ons).

AllNews understands that recent howlers from the Spanish goalkeeper, Kepa has made Chelsea bring in Mendy for some healthy competition between the sticks.

After signing his long-term contract with the Blues, Mendy said: "I am so excited to be joining Chelsea. It’s a dream for me to be a part of this exciting squad and to work with Frank Lampard and all of his coaching staff. I look forward to meeting my team-mates and can’t wait to get started."

On signing Mendy, Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: "As soon as Petr Cech and our technical team identified Edouard as the most suitable goalkeeper to complement our existing group, there was only one player we wanted to bring in. Edouard arrives following a season of real success with Rennes, he is ambitious for more, and we welcome him to our club."

Mendy kept nine clean sheets in 24 Ligue 1 appearances, compared to Kepa's eight cleans sheets in 33 Premier League appearances.

Though the Ligue 1 can not be compared in terms of intensity with the EPL, it simply shows what the 28-year-old is made of.

Last season, Mendy's save percentage was 76.3% and he conceded a goal every 114 minutes. Kepa's save percentage was 53.5%, conceding a goal every 63 minutes.

However, Kepa's passing accuracy was 79.7% compared to Mendy's 70.1%.
