Chidi Mokeme Reveals Battle With Bell’s Palsy [Video]

Veteran Nollywood actor Chidi Mokeme has revealed that he went off the movie scene because he came down with Bell’s palsy.

He revealed this when he appeared on Channels TV.

According to Mayo Clinic, Bell’s palsy is a condition that causes sudden weakness in the muscles on one side of the face.

In most cases, the weakness is temporary and significantly improves over weeks.

It makes half of the face appear to droop.

Smiles are one-sided, and the eye on the affected side resists closing.

The 50-year-old actor said that the doctor told him it was incurable and since they didn’t know what caused it, they didn’t know how to go about treating it.

“I have been off the scene for a while after we did the promotional tour for 76.

"Before that when we were preparing to go to the UK on a trip to British International Film Festival.

“I came down with something called Bell’s Palsy. It was the first time I was hearing it.

“It comes like a stroke and affects one side of your face and sort of gives you a droop.

“This was something the doctor said was incurable they didn’t know what caused it and how to treat it.

"For an actor, if you come down with something that affects your face, you can imagine what I was going through”. he shared.

According to him, he thought he could move around with it but later realised he couldn’t because attention was focused on his face when he went to the premier of the movie ‘76’ in Lagos.

“I thought it was something I could move around with. I tried to come for the Lagos premiere of ‘76’ at the time.

“But the attention was sort of focused on the face rather than the premiere and the things that were happening at the time.

“I knew that it wasn’t something that I could work with.

"So I said I would take time off to try and go sort out that problem that needed my face to be in top shape.

“In the meantime, I focused on doing my business.

"One of the other businesses that I do is seasonal lighting and décor.

"So I do Christmas lighting, commercial quantity Christmas lighting.

“We work for state government around the country, lighten up the state for seasonal purposes. That didn’t really need my face to show.

“So I just focused my attention on that while I was trying to get myself back. It took a while,” Mokeme said.
