Children’s Day 2020: 5 Take Home Points For Parents In Kids’ Early Years

Children’s Day 2020: 5 Take Home Points For Parents In Kid

Celebrating Children’s day goes beyond the usual buying of gifts, picnics, visits to the cinemas, flipping through old photographs and other activities.

While celebrating children’s day and making your kids feel special is important, it is also pertinent that parents take out time in building bonds with kids.

Training kids is far beyond enrolling them in most expensive schools, buying them most expensive gifts, or making them embrace a particular religion.

Spending time with your children is important, but this has been marred by busy schedules, denying them the quality time they need.

As Nigeria celebrates Children’s Day 2020, below are some essential aspects that should be imparted in kids. Although some parents shy away from these due to their busy schedule, ignorance or nonchalant attitudes.

Mental health

Mental health according to Medical News Today refers to cognitive, behavioral, and emotional well-being. It is all about how people think, feel, and behave. Many leave the job of studying their kids’ mental health to school teachers out of busy schedule or probably because the kids spend most of their time in schools.

This has a lot to do with parents creating much time for their children, as it builds the bonds between them and rather than seek help outside in turbulent times, they see their parents as their first confidants. This also helps to know when they are angry, need something urgently, when they are sad or depressed. It is safe to say that mental health is a subject that should be introduced with comfort at the early stage of a child’s life.

Relationships

It is important to establish a healthy relationship with children. Right from their tender age, teach them how to love and show affection towards another. The way and manner in which children are raised have a lot to do with their relationship when they are of age. Rather than shy away from telling them how much you love them each day, say and show it as it builds their self-esteem.

While it may be unacceptable by some parents, it is better to teach children the pros and cons of being romantically involved than breaking it off. However, when they hit their teen years is the most appropriate time to build a stronger relationship with them and with that, you help them become emotionally stable.

Travel and tourism

Children should not be denied after-school activities as educating a child goes beyond sitting in a classroom to learn. Travels and tourism do not only provide opportunities for children, but it also builds their self-esteem and give them a sense of belonging when they are with their peers. Traveling goes beyond what children come across, as it helps some find their true calling.

How well do they know their Culture?

It’s quite sad that many have deviated from their culture by embracing the foreign ones. While training a child, it is important to make them aware of their culture and the need to embrace it. All these cannot be taught in school, but the parents have lots of works to do. Rather than scolding them for speaking their indigenous language, teach them, so as to give them a sense of belonging.

Career choice

Every child should be given the freedom to adopt a profession of their preference, but it’s quite unfortunate that some parents force their children to pursue another line of career with the belief that their choice will be more fruitful or earn them respect in the society.

Many children may be forced into a line of career but may perform better in other professions. Here is another aspect where spending quality time with children comes into play. It is pertinent to study them to know where they will perform well and that will surely guide you as a parent when helping them in their career choice. Do not force a line of career on them.
