China: Scores Of Lives Lost In Heavy Downpour

Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced by heavy rains experienced in the south of China, with dozens of people missing or dead, as reported by Chinese media.

The weather has caused tourist areas to become more deplorable, with floods and mudslide causing 230,000 people to be displaced, and over 1,300 houses destroyed.

Six people in southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, have been reported to have died, according to Xinhua.

According to the local government of the area, over a thousand hotels have been waterlogged, with over 30 tourist sites badly damaged.

The torrential downpour has greatly impacted the region's tourism sector that is still recovering from the coronavirus pandemic.

China's emergency management ministry said that the flood has caused an economic loss of $550 million (4 billion yuan).

The state media also reported that not less than 13 people have been killed in the Hunan Province, with eight more people either killed or missing in the southwestern Guizhou province.

The rains which started early June have caused “dangerously high water levels” in 110 rivers, with the government expecting more rainstorms in subsequent days throughout the south of the country.
