China has threatened to restrict visas for US nationals in a retaliatory move against Washington after the United States placed a visa ban on Chinese officials over the restriction of visitors to Tibet.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Zhao Lijian, said that the move to restrict visas for US nationals is aimed at American nationals with "egregious conduct" that relate to Tibet matters.
Speaking with reporters, Zhao said that Chinese authorities want US officials to stop "interfering" in the internal affairs of China in relation to "Tibet issues."
Zhao said, "We urge the US to stop interfering in China's internal affairs with Tibet-related issues ... so as to avoid further damage to China-US relations."

Adding that Chinese authorities do not restrict travels to the Himalayan region, as it has assumed "certain management and protection measures for foreigners visiting Tibet in accordance with law and regulations."
On Tuesday, the Trump administration imposed travel bans on Chinese officials, after it accused China of limiting the travel of foreign diplomats and tourists as well as journalists to Tibet, a Chinese autonomous region.
The Trump administration argued that Chinese nationals enjoy far more freedom and "greater access" to the US.
