Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu on Sunday emphasized the importance of dialogue over confrontation between China and the United States during his address at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.

He acknowledged the differences between the two countries but stressed the need to seek common ground and mutual interests to deepen cooperation and strengthen bilateral ties.

Li warned that a severe conflict or confrontation between China and the U.S. would have devastating consequences for the world.

The strained relationship between Washington and Beijing is evident in various areas, including disagreements over Taiwan, territorial disputes in the South China Sea, and U.S. restrictions on semiconductor chip exports.

As tensions escalate, recent incidents in the Taiwan Straits involving unsafe maneuvers by a Chinese destroyer near a U.S. warship highlight the risks of accidents and miscalculations.

Li criticized freedom-of-navigation patrols by the United States and its allies and called for responsible engagement in the region.
