The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of veteran Nollywood actor Chiewetalu Agu, revealing that it was done during the 'Exercise Golden Dawn' patrol.
The arrest was disclosed by the Army Spokesperson, Brigadier Onyema Nwachuku on Thursday, saying that the actor was arrested for soliciting support for the proscribed group, IPOB.
Viral video clips of the arrest circulated the internet on Thursday and they all show Chiwetalu Agu (who was wearing IPOB regalia at the time) being manhandled by soldiers.
Speaking further, Nwachuku stated that the army would ensure the clampdown of those "who continue to promote the group which is tantamount to going against the Nigerian constitution”.
Commenting on Agu's apprehension by the Nigerian Army, the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) via its president, Emeka Rollas, condemned the fact that the Nollywood star was wearing an IPOB regalia despite being aware of the insecurity in the country.
Rollas added that the guild was doing everything possible to ensure that the actor are released.
"I don't know why he put on Biafra regalia. The State is hot and he knows this. We are in talks with the military officials to ensure he is released. We will do our best.
"I heard they have taken him to 82 Division of the Nigeria Military base," he said.
