Congo: 30 Drown, 167 Missing In Boat Mishap

A regional official told Reuters on Sunday that at least 30 people drowned and 167 remain missing after a boat sank on the Congo River in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo late on Friday.

According to Didier Mbula, the provincial health minister for Equateur Province, 189 people have been rescued and the search is still ongoing.

"According to the numbers we have so far at the provincial government, 30 corpses have been recovered, 167 are still missing," Mbula stated in a statement.

In Congolese waterways, deadly boat accidents are common, as vessels are typically laden far above their capability. The country's vast, forested territory has few paved roads, and river travel is popular.

The locally built boat that capsized near Mbandaka was carrying more than 300 people and was sailing at night, according to Mbula.

"We think that the toll could climb because we have just removed the 30th corpse," he went on to say.
