Twenty-one people have died with 13 others in critical condition after imbibing a contaminated alcoholic beverage in Jalisco a Mexican state, according to authorities in the region.
The event has seen a total of 56 getting sick in two municipalities in Jalisco, as revealed by Huge Esparza, a state health official, at a press briefing.
Esparza also noted that the 13 who were in critical states were conveyed to hospital in the capital of Jalisco, Guadalajara, in a helicopter, while the remaining were discharged.
He said that the patients began displaying “symptoms of blurred vision and/or vision loss, intense abdominal pain, difficulty breathing and convulsions."

It was disclosed that the victims had taken in some form of cane alcohol that was purer than was made for ingestion and was produced in Michoacan state, Jalisco's neighbor.
The days that followed saw authorities seize a total of 700 litres of the beverage.
Lab test revealed a “high concentration” of methanol “as an additive to liquid fuels,” Denis Santiago, another state health official in Jalisco stated.
He added, “This chemical agent is for industrial use."
