Coronavirus: Brazil Records More Than 50,000 Deaths

Over 50,000 people have died from the coronavirus pandemic in Brazil, according to the Brazilian Government.

The country has also recorded about one million infections, making Brazil the second most-hit country after the United States with 2.32 million cases.

In the last 24 hours, the Brazilian Health Ministry recorded 641 deaths bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 50,617, with the total number of infections standing at 1,085,038.

Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro, had always been vocal against the stay-at-home measures employed by local authorities, stating the economic impact on the economy.

He has described the negative economic hit the country would suffer as worse than the virus itself, a virus that he called a "little flu."

The Latin American region is seeing a spike in the number of cases, with Chile, Mexico, and Peru recording high numbers.

Chile has a total of 7,144 fatalities, while Mexico has a total of 20,349 deaths, with 170 infections.

Peru has over 8,000 deaths, as the country prepares to open up parts of its economy.

Brazil is a South American country with a lot of history with Nigeria. Portuguese is the official language of the country. There are about 90,000 Nigerians legally residing in Brazil as of 2019. It is a huge jump, putting into the context that in 2012 there were only about 3,072 according to a 2014 report on regular migrants in Brazil.
