A tally by Johns Hopkins University puts the total number of coronavirus deaths in the United States, as of Sunday, at 40,000.
The tally showed that across the United States, the death toll from the novel coronavirus stands at 40,585, with nearly half of them emerging from New York, with the governor of the state describing the move as saying that it is “on the descent.”
The death toll in the United States surged past numbers recorded in the European country of Italy, the continent's worst-hit country, falling behind the US with a death toll of 23,660.

According to the tally, the total number of confirmed cases in the US stands at 742,442.
