Coronavirus: NANS Kwara Warns Inter-State Commercial Drivers

The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Kwara State Axis, has warned transport companies and inter-state drivers to desist from taking undue advantage of students in the face of coronavirus outbreak by skyrocketing transport fares.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Comr. Salami Wasiu Onidugbé, the Association described the act as “ungodly and uncharitable move, given that it has negative financial and psychological impacts on the student populace.”

"Students remain the most popular and regular patronizers of these transporters at this trying period sequel to the order by the FG that schools be shut down till further notice. However, this shouldn't be used as an avenue to exploit them.

"Revelations have emerged on how ravenous transporters in Ilorin, Kwara State are exploiting the situation to flare up Ilorin to Lagos transportation fare hitherto for N2,500 to N6,500 and even above. This has left quite a number of students stranded at car parks.

"NANS Kwara as the apex student body in Kwara State believes that this evil shouldn't stand as it is devilish and mean. We would deploy all the weapons and resources at our disposal to ensure we stop this menace caused by the league of state transport owners. This is not the first time, inter-state drivers have always been taking undue advantage of students, but this one is too revealing," the statement read in parts.

The student’s body also called on the federal government to punish filling stations, who are yet to fully comply with the directive of the federal government by changing their litre price from #145 to #125.

Allnews reported that the federal government of Nigeria reduced the fuel price from the initial N145 to N125 following the slump in the international crude oil price, from $60 to $28.
