Coronavirus: South Sudan's Defence Minister Tests Positive

 

South Sudan's Minister of Defence, Angelina Teny, who is also the wife of the vice president, Riek Machar, has tested positive for coronavirus.

This comes after her husband, Riek, was said to have tested positive for the disease on Monday, according to a statement from his office.

The office had stated, via its official Facebook page that “a number of his office staff and bodyguards” have been infected by the virus.

A press release said that Riek “has issued a public statement declaring that he is found positive, and from today will self-quarantine in his residence for the next 14 days."

So far, South Sudan has recorded a total of 339 confirmed coronavirus cases, with six fatalities, as disclosed by the country's health ministry.

It has also carried out 3,908 tests across the country.

South Sudan is plagued by humanitarian issues, as the country reels from its six-year civil war, with over 30,000 displaced from their homes, camping in the country's capital of Juba where the United Nations houses them.

The displacement camps in Juba and northern Bentiu, have recorded 2 cases each.
