Council Elections: Low Turn Out Of Voters In Some Alimosho P

Some residents of Idimu, Egbeda inward Akowonjo area of Alimosho in Lagos on Saturday expressed concern over the low turnout of voters in the ongoing local government chairmen and councilors elections.

Speaking with AllNews Nigeria during at polling unit in the Idimu area, Mr. Yusuf Fadiaro lamented that there was a very low turnout in the area, added that the development was not good.

When asked the reason for the low turnout, Yusuf said, it might be due to sensitization, security reasons, poor belief in the electoral process, and more.

According to him, “I have been here since 8:15 to exercise my right and only a few have come out to do the same thing. As you can see, some youths are busy playing football, and others in the house.

"The low turnout is caused by nothing other than inadequate sensitization of Lagosians, security and people not believing in any election done in Nigeria. Brother I don't blame them o!!!"

Also speaking, a 60-year-old voter simply identified as Kenneth said that he was not impressed with the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) officials over the late deployment of election materials, malfunctioning of card readers.

“I came out at 8.00 a.m. since curfew starts by then and up till now, 9:53 am, where are our residents, even these LASIEC officials came late with one issue or the other.

“Lagosians and Nigerians at large need to be more sensitized on the importance of voting during elections because most people are not aware it is their right, neither are they aware of what's happening today".

Also, he advised  LASIEC officials and INEC officials to be up and doing.

Further, some voters and party agents at Williams estate, Akowonjo roundabout also complained about the low turnout of voters.

They attributed the development to fear of violence and the possible malfunctioning of electoral materials and insecurity.

However, in majority of the polling unit within Alimosho, security officials, Nigeria red cross officials were also on standby.

Today, Saturday, July 24th, 2021, Lagosians cast their ballots in polling units across local councils in the state to elect their local government chairmen and councilors for a fresh four-year term

The polls runs across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Development Areas of the state.

The Lagos State Government and had on Thursday announced a restriction of movement between 8.00 am and 3.00 pm to allow for the Local Government election in the state.
