Coup scare: Nigerian minister makes clarifications

A news report about a purported coup panic in the nation has been refuted by Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, who emphasised that the allegation is categorically false and represents a horrific act of deception.

He said that the report is the product of critics' twisted imaginations, with the deliberate goal of causing instability in the nation and undermining the current government.

Idris stated that to revive the economy and pave the way for citizen prosperity, the government would not be sidetracked or frightened into reversing course.

It is now clear, according to the minister, that certain desperate people are using fake news to undermine popular confidence in the administration and plant the seeds of conflict throughout the nation.

Idris stated that the government will use its legal authority under the Federal Republic of Nigeria's legislation to restrain rogue activities that could jeopardise the country's hard-won democracy and national security.

He pleaded with the public to use caution and abstain from disseminating or magnifying the false information, which is purposefully being placed on some compliant and compromised news outlets.

“The report is the figment of the warped imagination of detractors, whose malicious intent is to destabilize the country and undermine the present administration.

“It is now evident that some desperate individuals have resorted to publishing fake news to erode public trust in the government and sow the seeds of discord in the country.

“The government will exercise its rights within the federal republic of Nigeria’s laws to contain rogue actions to destabilize national security and the nation’s hard-earned democracy", the Minister's statement reads.
