Coupe de France: Marseille Knock PSG Out To Enter Quarterfin

Ruslan Malinovskyi

Olympique Marseille made history on Wednesday by defeating Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 at home for the first time since 2011, advancing to the quarterfinals of the French Cup.

The match started with a slow pace for Marseille, but they picked up momentum as the game went on. Goalkeeper Pau Lopez thwarted Nuno Mendes's early opener, while Matteo Guendouzi's shot was excellently saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

In the 31st minute, Alexis Sanchez scored the first goal of the match from the penalty spot after Sergio Ramos clumsily fouled Cengiz Under inside the area. But Ramos made up for his mistake by equalizing just before halftime with a header from a Neymar set-piece.

The second half saw Ukraine international Ruslan Malinovskyi score a spectacular winner, blasting a left-footed shot into the top corner. PSG attempted a late comeback, with Lionel Messi and Neymar both coming close to levelling the score, but ultimately failed to do so. In injury time, Ramos had a goal disallowed for being offside and missed another opportunity with a shot straight at Lopez.

Marseille captain Valentin Rongier expressed joy over the long-awaited victory over PSG, saying "We know that our supporters have been waiting for that victory for a long time. We are happy to share this with them." On the other hand, PSG skipper Marquinhos admitted that "We made a few mistakes that cost us dearly" and vowed to "keep working and move forward."

With this victory, Marseille are now considered favourites to lift the trophy for the 11th time, but the first since 1989.
