Court of Appeal upholds removal of 27 Rivers Assembly members

Court of Appeal upholds removal of 27 Rivers Assembly member

The Court of Appeal in Abuja, has declined to reinstate Martins Chike Amaewhule and 26 other members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who were recently removed from their positions.

This decision was made in a virtual session held on Friday.

The court ruled that, overturning the earlier decision of the Federal High Court which declared their seats vacant would be inappropriate at this stage, as it would preempt the ongoing appeal process.

The three-judge panel emphasized that a reversal of the Federal High Court's ruling could be seen as prejudging the merits of the appeal currently before them.

As such, the panel opted to maintain the status quo until a full hearing can be conducted.

The court has scheduled the hearing of the appeal for June 20.

During this session, Amaewhule and other former Assembly Members will present their case to regain their seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly.

This development comes as the appellants seek to challenge their removal and restore their positions within the legislative body.

The justices prayed all parties in the matter to maintain the status quo and cease every form of hostilities until the matter is heard and decided.
