Court Orders Release Of Orji Uzor Kalu From Correctional Ce

A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the release of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu from the Correctional Centre.

Recall that AllNews reported how the Supreme Court in Nigeria nullified the conviction of the former governor of Abia state, Orji Uzor Kalu, and ordered the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court to reassign the case for a fresh trial.

Kalu was convicted by the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court on Thursday, December 5, 2019, and sentenced to 12 years in prison for N7.65 billion fraud.

He was convicted for defrauding the government of Abia State where he was a governor for 8 years using his company, Slok Nigeria Limited.

Days after the court ordered the forfeiture of the company, Nigeria anti-graft agency, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) commenced the process of winding down Slok Nigeria Limited including The Sun Publishing Ltd which was not part of the charges.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had described the decision of the Supreme Court to nullify the 12-year jail term of a former governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu, as "unfortunate", while assuring that the Commission is prepared for a fresh and immediate trial of the case because its evidences against Kalu and others are overwhelming.

Kalu is now free to go home following Tuesday's pronouncement by Justice Mohammed Liman of the Federal High Court in Lagos.
