On Wednesday, a 39-year-old mechanic, Musiliu Owolabi, was sentenced to death by hanging by an Abeokuta High Court for killing his lover, Afusat Idowu, in Ogun state.
Owolabi was convicted on a one-count charge of murder.
The police prosecutor, James Mafe, had earlier told the court that the convict committed the crime at Camp area of Abeokuta on February 1, 2018.

The prosecutor stated that Owolabi took the deceased to a hotel for pleasure after which she complained of having a stomachache.
“The convict took her to his vehicle. On his way, he noticed she was dead and he secretly took the deceased to an uncompleted building, dug a shallow grave, and buried her without disclosing to anybody.
“The convict was arrested when a younger brother of the deceased went to a police station to complain that his sister, who told him she was going for a naming ceremony at Bode Olude area, never returned.”
He noted that the murder contravened the provisions of Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.
Mafe said that the police, in the course of its investigation, discovered that the convict was the last person who spoke with the deceased.

He added that Owolabi already made a confessional statement and took the police to the spot where he buried Afusat.
In her ruling, the Chief Judge of Ogun State, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu sentenced Owolabi to death by hanging.
She held that the prosecution proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the convict was guilty as charged.
