COVID-19: Controversy Surrounds Cause Of Death Of Ex-NNPC GM

Controversy has surrounded the cause of death of the immediate past Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru. Baru passed away on Friday night, while the NNPC didn't reveal details of the cause of death, there are report linking it to COVID-19 complications.

Baru's death was announced by the incumbent NNPC GMD, Mele Kyari today. Kyari made this known on his official Twitter page, @MKKyari, while praising Baru as a man of exemplary character.

"My brother, my friend and my mentor, Dr Maikanti Kachalla Baru, immediate past GMD of NNPC died late last night. He was of exemplary character and disposition. May Allah forgive him and have mercy upon him." Kyari tweeted.

Controversy Surrounding Cause Of Death

Meanwhile, Baru, before his death, had spent two days at NNPC clinic at Maitama. He reportedly passed away of COVID-19 while receiving treatment at the Cedar Crest Hospital in Abuja, according to a Political commentator, Adetutu Balogun.

Balogun disclosed that an unapproved rapid test kit was used to take Baru's sample for COVID-19 at the NNPC clinic, the result came back negative, however, his condition worsened and Baru was transferred to Cedar Crest Hospital, where he was diagnosed with COVID-19.

 

 

 

However, NNPC kept mum on the cause of death. In a statement seen by AllNews, NNPC simply stated that he passed away after a "brief illness" on Friday night, a statement by the Corporation's Public Affairs GGM, Kennie Obateru, revealed.
