COVID-19: Death Toll In Africa Hits 1,000

In Africa over 1,000 people have died from the novel coronavirus since it broke out last year in the province of Wuhan in China.

The country with the most deaths recorded is Algeria, with a death toll of 364, closely followed by Egypt with 205 death, Morocco with 135 death, and South Africa with 50 deaths.

Across the African continent, a total of 19,334 coronavirus cases have been recorded.

Although, the African continent has been less hit by the virus compared to other parts of the world, per the figures made available by authorities, a limited testing capacity factors into why the real figures are hazy.

Globally, the death toll from the disease has risen to 150,000, with over 2.2 million recorded cases.

Medical experts fear of the spread of the virus in Africa, taking into consideration the lack of trained personnel and medical equipment to handle the spread.

Measures employed by African governments to contain the spread of the virus have been hard to enforce, as many are poor and many communities are hugely populated with the possibility of the disease spreading rapidly.

IMF and the World Bank had said that the continent would need $44 billion to add to its current funds to effectively fight the disease despite the debt relief many countries have been granted and the many donations of other private individuals and corporate bodies.
