COVID-19: Death Toll In Britain Surpasses Italy's

Britain unseats Italy as the European country with the highest number of deaths from the novel coronavirus, as the country records a death toll of over 32,000, according to official data.

The new figure, as released by the country's regional health authorities and the Office for National Statistics (ONS), has not yet been added to the government's daily numbers which still stand at 29,427.

The current official death toll in the country (29,427) still beats the total death toll of Italy which has a total of 29,316 fatalities from the pandemic, and far lower than that of the United States with a death toll of 69,000.

The British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has warned against comparing numbers with other countries.

Addressing journalists during the daily Downing Street press conference, Dominic said, “There are different ways of counting deaths… we now publish data that includes all deaths in all settings and not all countries do that.

“Can you reliably know that all countries are measuring in the same way? And it also depends on how good, frankly, countries are in gathering their statistics.”

He described the fatalities as "a massive tragedy" adding that the deaths was “something in this country, on this scale, in this way, that we’ve never seen before."
