COVID-19: Nigeria Records Highest Daily Tally Since August

Nigeria has recorded more than 70, 000 Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases after recording the highest daily tally since late August, on Tuesday.

A total of 550 people tested positive for the disease Tuesday, taking the number of confirmed cases in the country to 70, 195.

That daily figure is the highest Nigeria has recorded since August 23 when 601 cases were reported. The country’s highest daily COVID-19 cases so far was 745, recorded on June 19.

One person also died from the disease on Tuesday, taking total fatalities in Nigeria from COVID-19 to 1,182.

Meanwhile, of the over 70,190 persons infected by the disease in Nigeria, 65,110 have been discharged from hospitals after treatment, while over 3, 903 active cases remain in the country.

The 550 new cases are reported from 17 states- Lagos (219), FCT (168), Kaduna (52), Kwara (19), Kano (15), Rivers (15), Sokoto (10), Enugu(9), Gombe (8), Plateau (7), Osun (7), Anambra (5), Oyo (5), Jigawa (4), Ogun (4), Bauchi (2) and Edo (1).

This is according to an update Tuesday night by the Nigeria’s Center for Disease Control (NCDC).

Nigeria’s former federal capital, Lagos, led in Tuesday's tally with 219 new infections.

As of 8 December 2020, more than 67.9 million cases have been confirmed worldwide, with more than 1.55 million deaths attributed to COVID-19.
