COVID-19: Schools In New York To Remain Closed Until End Of

As coronavirus cases globally continue to surge, with no end in sight, the Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, said that public schools in the state will be closed until the end of the school year, with the governor of the state responding, saying that the decision of whether to keep schools closed or not rested with him. 

Bill said that, “There is nothing easy about this decision, it clearly will help us save lives.”

In reponse to the statement by the Mayor, the Governor of the state Andrew Cuomo said that the resolution to do so was his.

Cuomo said, “You can’t make a decision just within New York City without coordinating that decision with the whole metropolitan region, because it all works together."

Cuomo said that he was aware of the position of the Mayor, and understood it, “which is he wants to close them until June, and we may do that, but we’re going to do it in a coordinated sense with the other localities.”

The lockdown of New York city has affected 1.1 million students. The mayor is hopeful that school activities would kick off in September.

New York has recorded a total of 170,000 cases, with a death toll of over 8,000.
