COVID-19: South Africa's Cases Rise To 1,505

The South African Government on Friday announced that that the death toll of South Africa had been increased by 2, with 43 new cases confirmed, making South Africa, the most hit country on the African continent, with a record of 1,505 confirmed cases and 7 deaths.

The country's Minister of Health, Zweli Mkhize, disclosed these figures, adding that the numbers are probably higher, and that the reason for the uncertainty as to the actual number is because of the limitations in testing.

The minister stated, at a press conference, “I want to raise the point that this number is affected by… the limitations of the active testing that we are doing.

“When we extend the testing… we actually expect these numbers to increase.”

The government of the country, in order to carry out an extensive testing exercise, initiated a door-to-door test for coronavirus, deploying over 10,000 workers to serve its 57 million citizens.

Areas that will receive more attention are overcrowded and poor townships, where the order to stay indoors might seem a bit difficult to adhere to., to reduce to spread of the virus.

On the effectiveness of the 21-day lockdown, the Health Minister said that the South African Government was yet to determine how well it was working.

He said, “We need a lot more data that are going to show us the various trends of what is going on.”
