COVID-19: South Africa's Cases Surge Past 5,000

 

South Africa's coronavirus cases have jumped past 5,000, as of Thursday, after the country recorded its biggest daily number since the outbreak, South Africa's Ministry of Health said. 

On Thursday, South Africa confirmed 354 new cases, making the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country 5,350, with the number of fatalities increased by 10 making it 103.

In a statement by the health ministry, “This is the highest number of cases in a 24-hour cycle recorded to date and represents a 73 percent increase relative to the day before."

Prior to Thursday, South Africa recorded 203 new cases, making it one of the worst-hit countries on the African continent, closely followed by Egypt.

The government says that it will begin to ease its restrictions on movement starting May 1.
