COVID-19: Suspend Academic Activities Immediately, NUC Tell

Following the second wave of COVID-19, the National University Commission (NUC) has asked the management of Universities in Nigeria to immediately suspend academic activities that will lead to a large gathering in the school premises.

Announcing this development, Chris Maiyaki the deputy director of  NUC said that classroom, hostels accommodation, conferences and seminars should be suspended.

The commission further told University management to shut-down schools until the Federal government issues a fresh directive for re-opening.

“Vice-Chancellors are to please note that the directive is part of the measures approved by Mr. President to mitigate the second wave of coronavirus infections in the country.

“The affected officers are expected to perform their duties from home while those on GL13 and above should strictly adhere to the extant preventive measures, including maintenance of physical distancing, regular washing of hands and/or sanitizing of hands, wearing of face masks and reducing the number of visitors to offices.”

This directive comes shortly after the Academic Staff Union of Universities suspend its 8-month old strike.

Recall that the students of Federal Universities have been out of school for eight months following the strike by the academic staff union.

However, the second wave of COVID-19 has dampened the hopes of students who were preparing to resume back to school after an 8-month long break.

Following the second wave of the virus, the federal government while placing restrictions on social activities also directed workers from level 12 and below to remain at home.
