COVID-19: Zimbabwe's Lockdown Extended By Two Weeks

The President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa, announced the extension of the lockdown initiated in the country on 30th March by two weeks.

In a chat with journalists at the State House, Emmerson said, “Government has decided to extend with immediate effect the lockdown by a further 14 days.

“The country is yet to meet the conditions for lifting the lockdown announced by the World Health Organisation.”

The "conditions" as stipulated by the World Health Organisation (WHO) state that for measures to be relaxed in a country, there should be a significant decline and there should be well-equipped isolation facilities in the country to handle the cases that emerge.

So far, Zimbabwe has a record of 25 confirmed cases, with a death toll of 3.

The South African country had, before the outbreak of the pandemic, being beset by a failing medical system, with scant  medical resources and incessant strikes by medical professionals.

The Zimbabwean Government has been sued by the association of healthcare workers, accusing the government of the country of falling short in the provision of protective gear for the medical workers fighting the pandemic.
