Curfew Imposed In Darfur After Gunmen Looted Food Warehouse

Authorities in Sudan’s Northern Darfur State have announced a night curfew after gunmen attacked and looted a food warehouse meant for the World Food Programme (WFP).

In a statement released by the United Nations on Wednesday, it stated that more than 1,700 tonnes of food meant to feed 730,000 vulnerable people for a month were looted from the warehouse.

UN humanitarian coordinator, Khardiata Lo N’diaye said that: “One in 3 people in Sudan needs humanitarian assistance. Such an attack impedes our ability to deliver to the people who need it the most."

“We call upon the government of Sudan to step up efforts to protect and safeguard humanitarian assets."

The state governor of Darfur called the act a “barbaric one” and said those responsible will face justice.

The state of Darfur has seen an increase in violence since October, on disputes over land, livestock, access to water and grazing. Also, over 250 people have been killed in the fight between herders and farmers.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), tens of thousands have fled their homes due to violence.

The United Nations Office for the coordination of Humanitarian Affairs stated that over 14 million Sudanese will need humanitarian aid next year.
