Former Immigrantion Minister of Denmark, Inger Stojberg has been sentenced to two months in prison after she was found guilty by a special court for illegally separating underage couples seeking asylum.
She was accused of violating the European Convention on Human Rights by the Denmark’s Court of Impeachment of the Realm on Monday, citing she ordered the separation of asylum-seeking couples.
The former immigration minister had pleaded not guilty in the trial that began in September. In 2016, 23 couples were separated by her, without individual examination of their case. Her decision was found to be unlawful.
It is claimed that those serving less than six months in Denmark are eligible for electronic monitoring, meaning she is unlikely to spend any time in prison.
She served as the Minister for Immigration and Integration in the country from 2015 to 2019.
