Former Real Madrid B and Levante striker, David Barral has become the first-ever player to be purchased using cryptocurrency as he penned a deal with Bitcoin as means of payment.
The 37-year-old officially signed for Segunda B side DUX Internacional de Madrid this week in a deal funded entirely through the use of bitcoin - the digital or virtual currency that uses peer-to-peer technology to facilitate instant payments.
"David Barral new player of DUX Internacional de Madrid, welcome to the infinite club!" the club wrote. "He becomes the first signing in history in cryptocurrencies. Thanks to Criptan, our new sponsor, for making it possible."

The club, who are part of DUX Gaming - an eSports club owned by footballers Borja Iglesias and Thibaut Courtois, has not yet disclosed the total value of the deal, but the move for Barral was 'made possible' by the Spanish club's sponsor with Criptan.

During his stint as a player in the Spanish’s top division, Barral played a total 221 games and 60 when he played in the second division. In total, Barral scored 53 goals, 46 when playing for Sporting and 7 when playing for Racing.
Barral’s crypto financed move, which was also announced on Twitter, sparked interest on the social media platform.
For instance, some Twitter users wondered if Barral could also charge or receive payments in crypto. However, some crypto supporters were happy with the way the player’s acquisition was carried out.
