Deadly Storm Causes Mass Evacuation In Philippines

Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated in the Philippines as one of the world’s strongest storms hit the Asian nation.

The Philippine’s weather bureau, PAGASA, had said that the Typhoon Rai happened in Surigao del Norte’s Siargao Island on Thursday.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) declared Rai as a super typhoon which makes it the 15th typhoon to hit the country this year.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have referred to the  typhoon, one of the world’s strongest storms of 2021.

In the province of Surigao del Norte, it is said that about 51,000 residents have been evacuated so far. The government’s disaster response agency also said that over 98,000 people had been evacuated across the country.

Philippine is regularly hit by deadly typhoons every year. In October, at least 11 people were killed and seven others went missing when a Typhoon hit the northern and western parts of the country.
