According to NBC News, the narrative of the documentary is a familiar one; a talented girl who achieves celebrity status at a young age, loses control of her identity, suffers a traumatic sexual assault, and turns to drugs, self-injury and an eating disorder in a desperate bid to regain control.
Unlike other documentaries about pop culture icons, Dancing with the Devil focuses less on the toxic elements associated with celebrity culture, and sheds a light on Lovato as a recovering drug addict and a potentially unreliable narrator of her own story.

The highlight of the documentary is the singer's overdose on heroin and fentanyl on July 24, 2018. That night, she had returned from a party and called her drug dealer after her friends went home.
She overdosed and was left for dead until her assistant, Jordan Jackson, found her the following morning and called for an ambulance. It was subsequently determined that she had suffered strokes and a heart attack.
Speaking on her experience that night, Lovato said: "I wish I could say the last night I ever touched heroin was the night of my overdose, but it wasn't."
The first episode of Dancing with the Devil was released on YouTube on Tuesday, March 23, and new episodes will arrive weekly on each of the next two Tuesdays (March 30 and April 6).
