Democracy Day: Ogun To Honour MKO Abiola On Monday

The Ogun State Government has revealed that Democracy Day in 2023 will be held to honour Moshood Kashimawo Abiola.

It also revealed that the event is to take place on Monday, June 12, at the M.K.O Abiola International Stadium in Kuto, Abeokuta.

The event will commence at 10:00 am.

MKO Abiola was the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election in Nigeria which was recognised as the freest since Nigeria gained independence from Great Britain on Saturday, October 1, 1960.

This was made known in a statement released by Kehinde Onasanya, the Permanent Secretary of the Bureau of Political Affairs and Administration.

"The celebration aims to honor the late Chief Moshood Kasimawo Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election and a symbol of democracy in the country.

"The programme will include a march-past by students, voluntary organizations, artisans, and trade unions.

"Additionally, there will be tributes and solidarity messages from Civil Society Organizations, Pro-Democracy groups, and Human Rights Activists.

"Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State will deliver the 'Democracy Day' address to the people of the state during the occasion.

"Prior to the stadium rally, a prayer session will be held at Chief MKO Abiola's family house in Gbagura, Abeokuta, starting at 9:00 am."

The Federal Government had declared Monday, June 12, 2023 a public holiday to mark Democracy Day in Nigeria.
